Darwin's theories explained that human beings evolved gradually over millions of years from tiny single cell organisms to apes and to finally us. This is backed by centuries of verifiable evidence discovered under the painstaking toil of generations of scientists. This is the also the bedrock of the Humanist worldview.

The SHM explores Evolution as the central "story" of life on Earth, its implications on who we are and our place in this world. This is in commemoration of Charles Darwin and his ideas in conjunction with his 200th birth anniversary.

It was only the second gathering the SHM but it generated quite an interest with over 30 people turning up. They range from working professionals such as lawyers, civil servants, bankers and journalists, to students in their late teens and early 20s.

Participants watched a documentary made by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins titled "The Genius of Charles Darwin". This screening is also part of the SHM celebration of the 150th anniversary of The Origin of Species and the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, author of the groundbreaking work. In addition, there was a superb violin performance by local musicians, who the SHM organisers invited to play.
